For the very first time in my life I competed in the United States. The wonderful Sebring International Raceway hosted the first round of the 2023 World Endurance Championship season, as well the Prologue. Therefore, we travelled to the Southeastern corner of the USA. Right from the start, I loved the atmosphere – I could really live here.
In training mode, our #9 Prema Racing car looked very competitive. We managed to fix some issues during the Prologue and tried to prepare the best way possible for the race weekend, which wasn’t really a weekend: we qualified at Thursday and raced at Friday, due to the fact that IMSA raced at the very same track a day later. It was cool to see so much familiar faces at the same paddock.
Because our team mate Juan Manuel had some business in the Middle East, Lamborghini factory driver Andrea accompanied Filip and me for the Sebring race. It was Andrea who got the nod to qualify the car. Circumstances made it quite difficult and we had to settle for eighth position.

As cliché as it may sound, racing in WEC is a complete different ball game to racing in ELMS. I was used to four hour races, but kicked off with an eight hour race in WEC. Luckily, I was part of a two-driver team last year, so regarding driving time, not much has changed, though the strategies are completely different. We managed to find a good pace and were in the podium battle, until one of my team mates discovered there was something wrong with the car. Possibly, the car hit some damage.
We lost ground and had to maximize the opportunities. In the end, Filip, Andrea and I finished in eighth, exactly where we started. Not too bad, if you keep in mind we lost about a second per lap due to the damage. On an eight hour race, that’s a lot of time! Our sister car, the #63 Prema Racing, finished on the podium and that felt like a sort of vindication. At least, we know what this team is capable of. Upwards and onwards to Portimão!
