Sometimes Spa-Francorchamps can be synonymous with chaos, and that’s exactly what happened this year. Man, those six hours were about the hardest I ever competed in. With changing track conditions, hungry opponents and a very nimble car, we had to push our way through the field. And man, what were we ridiculously close to a win…
In Qualifying, I got myself, Filip and Andrea – who subbed for Juan once again – a decent sixth position. LMP2 is extremely competitive and I’m the first to admit that my racing craft is exceeding my qualifying skills. Nevertheless, this sixth position handed Filip a good change to bring the car further to the front, which he did. After his stints, we found ourselves in P5.
After Andrea had to do some consolidation because a sub-optimal pitstop, I got the nod once more to do a triple stint at the halfway mark. The car was just phenomenal. I was able to do everything I desired – at one point, I even overtook a bloody Hypercar! GT’s were all around the track, but I found a good rhythm in which I was able to pass them quite easily.
Two hours later, we found ourselves in P2, with the car in front of us driving on a different, aggravated strategy. A win seemed very possible. Sadly, one of the opponents crashed pretty hard, which brought out a lengthy Safety Car. Therefore, some opponents were able to just stretch their stints long enough to spare a pitstop. It dropped us back to P3. Just before the checkered flag was waved, Andrea lost another position because his tyres were done.
P4 is a decent result, which should, after difficult races in the USA and Portugal, make us proud. However, I feel a little disappointed for missing out on a podium finish. I would love to collect a WEC trophy!
